Features

TurboShelters® come with the following standard and optional features:

Structural Insulated Panels

TurboShelters® are built with Structural Insulated Panels (SIP). These are manufactured panels made up of either a layer of Expanded Polystyrene (EPS) or Polyurethane (PUR) sandwiched between two skins of Oriented Strand Board (OSB). SIPs share the same structural properties as an I-Beam or I-Column. The rigid EPS or PUR insulation at the core of the SIP acts as a web, while the OSB sheathing exhibits the same properties as the flanges. SIP panels are suitable for both vertical walls and horizontal roofs. Due to the lightweight properties and the size of the panels, assembly is quick when compared to traditional construction methods.

TurboShelters® are designed and built to use at least 50% less energy than conventionally framed homes. As a result, using an off-the-grid (OTG) renewable energy system has become financially viable. SIPs form a solid thermal envelope around the structure, creating an efficient heating and cooling environment; equipment can be downsized, reducing initial capital costs and ongoing operating costs and allowing for a reasonably sized and more affordable OTG system.

The SIP design of TurboShelters® allows them to be air tight, preventing allergens and dust from penetrating the shell, providing a healthier living environment. The design also creates a sound barrier providing a much more pleasant work and living space than conventional buildings.

Walls - 4.5" R19 EPS core SIP with 7/16" OSB skins
Roofs - 6.5" R29 EPS core SIP with 7/16" OSB skins
Floors - 10.25" R48 EPS core SIP with pressure treated 7/16" OSB skins

Doors
All thermal, protective glass or solid aluminum

Power Supply
Low voltage power supply (12 or 24 volt DC) allowing units to harness power from the sun and wind at the site, and utilize it to power lights, water purification units and low voltage heating and cooling systems.

Electrical
Pre-wiring to customer requirements

Lighting
Solar powered interior and exterior security lighting system.

Ballistic Protection

Other
Windows, siding, laminate or VCT flooring, and site applied membrane roofing

TurboShelter® offers the following upgrades:

  • Urethane cores to replace EPS (improved R value for less thickness, and higher fire rating)
  • Fiberglass encapsulated OSB skins
  • All foundations can have a full basement (SIP foundation walls), SIP on grade to replace concrete, and be elevated to avoid swampy areas and rodents
  • Floor area and wall height can be specified by customer
  • High performance fiberglass windows with insulated sashes and frames, triple glazing, tempered available

Installation

The flat pack design of TurboShelter® allows up to 6 units to be transported in one shipping container, resulting in affordable transportation costs. Alternatively, because of our commitment to sustainable development, we work with customers to set up manufacturing facilities, under license, to source and build the product locally, thus saving on shipping costs entirely.

Whether built on-site or shipped in, we recommend an installation service to complement any assembly crews you may have. Our structures are designed for rapid and simple assembly, requiring basic tools and human power to lift approximately 110 lbs structural insulated panels. If required, TurboShelters® can be assembled so that future disassembly and re-packing into containers is possible and readily achievable.
