Dr. Tarek Sardana recently retired from the Canadian Forces (CF) after 20 years of service as a Medical Officer and is currently a member of the CF Reserve Force. His primary role as a Flight Surgeon has provided him with a breadth of experience and expertise in human crisis situations, both in Canada and abroad.
Before joining the Chief of the Air Staff (CAS) in 2005, Dr. Sardana was the Flight Surgeon for the Directorate of Flight Safety in Ottawa and Wing Surgeon at CFB Trenton, where he was responsible for the medical care of CF members as well as worldwide air medical evacuation from overseas back to Canada. From 1997 until 1999, while completing an Advanced Aerospace Medicine Residency with the U. S. Navy, Dr. Sardana worked with NASA on the treatment of decompression sickness for astronauts serving on the International Space Station.
Over the course of his military career as a Medical Officer, he was deployed on months-long missions to the United Nations in the Golan Heights and Rwanda as well as on the Canadian Forces Mission to Haiti in 2004. As the Task Force Surgeon on this three-month mission in Haiti, his team developed a medical evacuation system, medical resupply system and disease prevention program. The latter task involved planning and executing the most effective provision of shelter and disease protection to the 550 Canadian Forces members. The project instilled in him valuable knowledge and experience in shelter development.
An active pilot, Dr. Sardana is an Associate Fellow with the Aerospace Medical Association and a member of the International Academy of Aviation & Space Medicine.
